들어가면서... 제 블로그를 자주 들어온 분이라면 제가 드라마를 즐겨 본다는 걸 아마 아실겁니다. 최근에 성횡리에 종영한 모범택시는 전형적인 권선징악시나리오에 기반한 드라마였는데요.

저번 포스팅의 연장선에서 이번 포스팅에서는 "바른 생활" 또는 "착하고 정직한 삶"을 의미하는 영어 표현인 "the straight and narrow"을 다뤄보고자 합니다. 이 표현도 성경 마태복음 7장 13절부터 14절까지 내용에서 유래되었는데요.

“Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”
(좁은 문으로 들어가라 멸망으로 인도하는 문은 크고 그 길이 넓어 그리로 들어가는 자가 많고 생명으로 인도하는 문은 좁고 길이 협착하여 찾는 이가 적음이니라)

위 성경 구절에서 알 수 있듯 "strait"는 고어로 "좁은"이란 뜻을 가지고 있습니다. 그래서 요즘 영어로 "strait"는 좁은 바다인 해협을 가르키고 "strait"라는 단어가 들어간 "straitjacket"은 움직일 수 없게 통이 좁은 구속복을 가르킵니다.

그래서 "the straight and narrow"는 바른 생활 또는 착하고 올곧고 정직한 삶을 의미하는 표현으로 발전하였고, 이 표현은 미국 법정 드라마나 범죄 드라마, 형사물에 많이 등장하는 표현입니다. 그리고 동사 keep을 쓴 "keep someone on the straight and narrow"로 주로 사용합니다.
