어제 회사에서 친한 동료가 영어로 쓴 메일을 좀 감수해 달라고 해서 보면서 여긴 정관사를 안 써도 될 것 같아요라고 했더니 "of"를 썼으니까 "the"를 무조건 써야 하는 거 아니냐며 묻더라고요. 그래서 제가 그런 규칙은 어디에 있어요라고 했더니 누가 단어와 단어를 연결하는 "of" 앞에는 무조건 "the"를 써야 한다고 가르쳐줬다고 하더군요. 순간 선무당이 사람 잡네 하는 생각이 들었습니다. 그래서 이번 포스팅에서 "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing"이란 표현을 다뤄볼까 합니다. 문자 그대로 해석하면, "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing"은 대충 아는 건 위험하다인 데요. 비슷한 한국어 속담으로는 "선무당이 사람 잡는다"가 될 것 같습니다. 

 

이 속담의 유래는 18세기 알렉산더 폽이라는 영국 시인이 쓴 에세이집이라고 합니다. 해당 문구가 나온 내용은 아래와 같은데요. 

A little learning is a dangerous thing;
섣부른 배움은 위험한 것이다.

폽의 원문은 "a little learning"이지만 이후 언론에서 잘못 인용되면서 "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing"으로 자리 잡았다고 합니다.

 

그럼 예시를 보면서 이 속담이 어떻게 사용되는지 알아볼까요?

1. 존은 온라인에서 의료 시술에 대해 읽고 의사의 도움이 필요 없이 할 수 있다고 생각했었지. 자기가 손을 안 댔다면 입원을 이렇게 오래 할 필요가 없을 텐데. 선무당이 진짜 사람 잡는 거지.  
   John read about the procedure online and thought he doesn’t need the doctor to get it done. Now he will have to stay in the hospital far more than he might have in the first place, a little knowledge is indeed a dangerous thing.
